About

I am a Professor of Science, Technology, and Development at the University of British Columbia. I am interested in how societies, especially developing countries, improve their environmental conditions and mitigate the consequences of technological change.

Research

My research interests are diverse. A common thread is the role of scientific and technical knowledge in solutions to problems of the environment, especially in developing countries. I also study emerging technologies and the social response they might engender.

Publications

This page will eventually list journal articles, book chapters, and reports. For now, please see Google Scholar.

Prospective Students

I work with Masters and Doctoral students who have a strong analytical background and a desire to work on questions of policy; most are quantitatively trained in the natural sciences and engineering or the empirical social sciences. Occasionally I admit students with previous training in qualitative fields.

My students are admitted to UBC’s Resource, Environment, and Sustainability Program.

What’s New
